Six Ways to Boost Parent Attendance at LAUSD School Board Meetings — Support This Resolution!

September 27, 2018 by Carl J. Petersen

Thanks to the Brown Act, by law, public meetings of school boards in the state of California are  made accessible to the public for attendance and comment.

But almost two-thirds of parents in two parent households work outside the home, as do about the same numbers of single-parent families. Meetings held during daytime working hours are almost impossible to attend. Lengthy waits of several hours to enter a too-small room, and then school board meetings that can extend all day or last until midnight are also a barrier to participation.

Despite these difficulties, many actual parents and community members persist and struggle to acquire a precious public comment card. It shouldn’t be so hard.

Let’s schedule LAUSD school board meetings on more evening and weekend times, provide overflow space with a remote feed to attendees, and resolve to adopt other innovative ideas to bring parent involvement and community participation into the digital age.

[…] In an attempt to fix these problems, I have proposed the “Board Meeting Accessibility to the Public” resolution. As permitted by Article 3, Section 35145.5. of the California Education Code, I have requested that the  LAUSD Board discuss this resolution at a future meeting. According to LAUSD policy, it will be heard during a Committee of the Whole Meeting. You can show your support by signing this petition. […]
