Parents, Teachers, and Even LAUSD School Board Members Speak Out Against Parent Trigger

Want to know what real-live parents think of “parent trigger”? Watch these videos. These selected speeches were excerpted from the June 18, 2013 Los Angeles Unified School District Board meeting and were made in response to board member Steve Zimmer’s resolution,  “Comprehensive Information for Parent-Initiated Transformation.”

Here’s what some parents had to say:

Here’s what some teachers had to say:

And here’s what some of the Board Members themselves had to say about a poorly-written, badly and inconsistently implemented law:

Resolution number 45 addresses many issues relating to the Parent Empowerment Act which have recently come to the attention of board members. The lack of clear guidelines and of opportunities for all stakeholders to access  information about the law, its implementation, and possible outcomes has caused confusion and conflict at school sites.  The resolution asks Superintendent Deasy to clarify the roles of all involved and to assure that information is distributed to all parents. Mr. Zimmer also requests that Sacramento make changes to the law that would prevent confrontations from escalating at eligible schools.

Video of the day-long Board meeting can be found here:

Indicative of the controversy surrounding the law’s fallibility is this exchange between LAUSD board member Bennett Kayser and Superintendent Deasy during the May 14th board meeting:

Kayser: This process really, it stinks.

Deasy: Who does it stink for?

Kayser: To the people who are getting poorly treated who we’ve seen here today. We have a process right now where petitions are being circulated, but no laws or guidelines other than you need petitions.
