To end bullying, we must have criminal sanctions, but more importantly, encourage a proactive culture of acceptance. What a difference affirmation of Tyler Clementi's sexual orientation and rights would've made, to both Clementi and his roommate, Dharun Ravi. Ravi will now serve a prison sentence of up to ten years for his role in persecuting Clementi to the point of suicide.

If we really want to stop bullying, writes Rinku Sen, we can’t just do it from the back end in criminal courts. We have to affirmatively, proactively expand the rights of LGBT people, immigrants, people of color and women.
