Banana 2: Asian Pacific American Bloggers Converge on Los Angeles Today

Today, K12NewsNetwork’s founder, Cynthia Liu, will speak at the second annual conference for Asian Pacific American bloggers on a panel about social media used for social activism: “Uncovering the Activist in You/Social Media for Social Change.”

Here’s a little more about it:

Creator: Edward Hong (of The HanSarang Movement)
Moderator: Keith Kamisugi (of keithpr.com)
Panelists: Jehanzeb Dar (of Muslim Reverie), Frances Kai-Hwa Wang (of Adventures in Multicultural Living), Fatemeh Fakhraie (of Muslimah Media Watch), Marissa Lee (of Racebending), Cynthia Liu (of K12-NN)

I’m excited to meet all the other members of my panel! And while you might wonder how Asian Pacific Americans are connected to the world of education, I’d argue that we are an important constituency disproportionate to our numbers. Colleges and universities have always been a key organizing base for APAs–for many, it’s the first time we encountered other APAs in significant numbers and began acquiring the networking and activism skills that we continue to use in the rest of our lives. We are educators, students, and staff–we work for diversity, LGBT issues, reproductive justice, and immigrants’ and workers’ rights. We break barriers in fields where there were once few or hardly any APAs: fashion, film/video, visual and performing arts, green energy and design. We’re movers and shakers and though we might be small in number, we can and do use social media to magnify our influence.

Betsy DeVos, #NOTMYSDOE

Take the pledge to #resist and fight for public schools as a public good TODAY.
