MUST READ: Nine Teen Suicides in One Minnesota School District

December 18, 2010 by K12NN Site Admin

Nine suicides of teenagers in one school district in one year. Yet the district claims none were the result of (homophobic) bullying despite surviving friends of the suicidal teens’ direct testimony to the contrary.

Can we agree on the following?

No child should experience abuse from his or her peers, period. And all schools MUST provide safe, healthy environments where children can learn. They must support students who are fragile or vulnerable because of mental health issues, or who develop mental health issues as a result of bad social dynamics at school. School policies should not add to the heartbreak of families who have lost their children.

It should really be that simple. And parents and students have a legal precedent to force school districts to end bullying when it’s reported to them if the districts aren’t already doing so.
