My quibble is this: do we get majors in math & science to teach K-6, or are most K-6 teachers generalists who add-on math/science? I’d like to see this broken out into subject specialties, because reliable reports indicate that STEM instruction at the elementary school level needs strengthening. This is something that other countries do & we don’t seem to — for example, their math teachers come from the same pool that majors in math in math departments & would otherwise be qualified to pursue graduate study in that field. cc Learning Matters

The assertion that our teachers come from ‘the bottom third’ has been in the air for some time. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg seems to believe matters are worse than that, because he recently told a press conference that most came from the bottom 20 percent of college graduates.
